Top 5 Walking Tracks in North Canterbury

We're so lucky to live in North Canterbury, surrounded by so many awesome walking tracks, with amazing views and surroundings.

It was no easy feat, but we’ve managed to cut our list down to our top five – as voted by The Sport Shop team! Do you agree? Let us know if you’ve got any tracks that you think deserve a mention!

1.Mt Grey Track

The Mt Grey Tack offers some of the best views in North Canterbury. Located 17km from Amberley, access to this track is on Cramptons Bush Road. After a two to three hour walk through forest and bushland to the summit, you will find yourself over 930m above sea level – making the views beyond spectacular! Read more here.

2. Tūhaitara Coastal Park

This 24.5km flat track follows the coast from Kaiapoi to Woodend, before finally ending up in Waikuku. You don’t have to do the full tack – you can just do whatever length suits you. The track is also suitable for wheelchairs or those pushing a buggy, making it perfect for the whole family! Read more here.

3. Mears Track, Oxford

Only five minutes’ drive from the township of Oxford, this loop walk takes approximately 20 minutes, making it an ideal stroll for families with little ones who are keen to get out and explore nature too! This area of bush incorporates a lookout and seating area, and is protected by the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust. Read more here.

4. NorthBrook Wetlands

Located at the southern end of the east belt, this 1.5km circuit walk follows the edge of the ponds, with viewing platforms along the way. It easily accommodates wheelchairs and buggies, with bikes also allowed on the track. Read more here.

5. Rakahuri Trail

On the banks of the Ashley River, this track was developed for walking and biking, and is an ideal place for a family picnic. The trail follows the river for 4km, then offers a number of different track options, depending on how long you are keen to walk for! Read more here.
